African American Studies

African American Studies at Santa Rosa Junior College is a multidisciplinary academic endeavor centered on black lives and experiences. The humanities, performing arts, studies of the natural world, the social sciences, and cinema, are brought together to explore the profound contributions of African American cultures to the Americas and to the world. Thus, we approach African American Studies as simultaneously authentically American while embedded within a global black diaspora stretching from the Caribbean to Europe to Asia. African American Studies at Santa Rosa Junior College is committed to examining and confronting white supremacy, anti-blackness, and racism through education and multiracial collaboration and solidarity. In examining white supremacy, African American Studies at Santa Rosa Junior College explores the life-affirming strategies that black people have employed to survive, resist, and flourish in the past, present, and most especially into the future.
